Should there be a uniform minimum age of marriage for men and women? The Delhi High Court will hear a public interest litigation in this regard in February 2020.
The court deferred the hearing because the Centre has asked for more time to file a response on the matter. The Law Commission of India also hasn’t filed its response yet.
The PIL was filed by BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Upadhyay.
Upadhyay has challenged the existing law stating that while men in the country are allowed to marry at 21, women are allowed to get married at 18. He said that this age distinction doesn’t have any scientific backing and is based on patriarchal stereotypes.
