New Delhi: The national capital has been placed on high alert ahead of Independence Day, with security agencies stepping up security across the national capital and the police displaying posters of 19 wanted terrorists at prominent public locations.
The posters carry photographs and identification details of terror suspects linked to groups including the Indian Mujahideen, Al-Qaeda and various Khalistani organisations.
The move is aimed at increasing public awareness and encouraging citizens to share information that could help authorities trace the wanted suspects, as reported by News18.
Displaying photographs of terrorists who could pose a threat to Delhi and the country is part of the security measures routinely undertaken ahead of major national events, particularly Independence Day and Republic Day, the police have said.
Riyaz Bhatkal and Shabandri Mohammad Iqbal, also known as Iqbal Bhatkal of the Indian Mujahideen feature in the posters. So do Mohammad Sharjeel Akhtar, Abu Sufiyan and Syed Mohammad Arshiyan these three are associated with Al-Qaeda.
Several Khalistani activists who have been proclaimed terrorists have also found themselves on the posters. They include Ranjit Singh alias Neeta and Paramjit Singh Pamma of the Khalistan Zindabad Force, as well as Arshdeep Singh alias Arsh Dala of the Khalistan Tiger Force.
The others include Harvinder Singh Sandhu alias Rinda, Wadhawa Singh Babbar and Gurmeet Singh Bagga, all linked to Babbar Khalsa International (BKI).
Security agencies have also intensified surveillance at locations considered vulnerable or crowded, including railway stations, bus terminals, markets, religious sites and other important installations, ahead of Independence Day.
Authorities said that security arrangements have also been strengthened at sensitive points across the capital, with agencies maintaining increased co-ordination to identify and respond to any potential threat.
Residents and visitors have been told by the police to remain vigilant and immediately report suspicious individuals or activities to the authorities.
Citizens who have information about any of the wanted suspects featured in the posters have also been asked to contact the police.
A lot of attention is being paid to areas around the Red Fort, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will raise the national flag on August 15.
