Depression Crosses Bengal-Odisha Coast Near Digha; IMD Issues Red, Orange Warning

Bhubaneswar: The depression over northwest Bay of Bengal crossed West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha coasts close to Digha between 10:30 am and 11:30 am on Sunday and lay centered about 20 km west of Digha and 70 km east-northeast of Balasore, the India Meteorological Department (IMD)’s regional centre here said in a special bulletin issued at 3 pm.

It is very likely to continue to move west-northwestwards and maintain the intensity of depression during next 24 hours, it said.

Squally surface wind with speeds reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph very likely over north and adjoining west central Bay of Bengal and along and off Odisha coast till August 15, which will gradually decrease thereafter.

Red warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) at a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls (>20cm) very likely to occur over the districts of Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Sonepur, Bargarh, Angul, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Keonjhar and Sundargarh.

Orange warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Bhadrak, Balasore, Cuttack, Kendrapada, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Khordha, Jajpur, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Boudh, Dhenkanal and Mayurbhanj.

Aug 15 (8.30 am) to Aug 16 (8.30 am)

Yellow warning: Heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh and Nuapada.

Aug 16 (8.30 am) to Aug 17 (8.30 am)

Light to moderate rain or thundershower very likely to occur at a few places over the districts of Odisha.

Aug 17 (8.30 am) to Aug 18 (8.30 am)

Yellow warning: Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Balasore.

Light to moderate rain or thundershower very likely to occur at many places over the districts of north Odisha and at a few places over the districts of south Odisha.

Aug 18 (8.30 am) to Aug 19 (8.30 am)

Yellow warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur and heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts Balasore, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, Angul, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Khurda, Puri, Kalahandi, Boudh, Kandhamal and Nayagarh.

Light to moderate rain or thundershower very likely to occur at most places over the districts of Odisha.
