Depression Over Bay In 24 Hours, Heavy Rain To Lash Odisha Till July 29; Check IMD Warning

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is likely to experience light/moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated falls till July 29 as the well-marked low pressure over westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal is likely to concentrate into a depression during next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Tuesday.

“Subsequently, it is likely to move slowly northwestwards across north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts.”

The MeT office has issued orange and yellow warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in some districts for two days – July 25 and July 26.

JULY 25

Orange Warning

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) very likely to occur at isolated places in Gajapati, Ganjam, Malkangiri, and Koraput.

Yellow Warning

Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) may occur at one or two places in Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Nabarangpur and Mayurbhanj.

JULY 26

Orange Warning

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) may occur at isolated places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Nuapada.

Yellow Warning

Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) also likely at one or two places over the districts of Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Balangir, Puri and Boudh.

Under the influence of well marked low pressure area and its further intensification and strong monsoon flow, squally weather with surface wind speed reaching 45 to 55 kmph very likely along & off Odisha coast, northwest adjoining West central Bay of Bengal till July 27. Fishermen have advised not to venture into sea along & off Odisha coast, Northwest & adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal during this period.

The weather agency has also warned of temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas, poor visibility during intense spells of rain and traffic congestion in urban areas and possibility of wall collapse of vulnerable kutcha houses and some damages of kutcha roads. There is also a possibility of landslides in vulnerable hilly areas of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal.

The intensity and area-wise rainfall would decrease in the state by July 27.

Light to moderate rain may continue at many places in the state, including interior, southern and coastal districts, during this period, it added.

According to a bulletin of SOA’s Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) in Bhubaneswar, widespread rainfall is expected across South Odisha on Tuesday and Wednesday with heavy precipitation at a few places. The districts, which are likely to receive the rains, include Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput,  Nabarangpur, Khurda, Puri, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur.

“The system could intensify into a depression on July 26 and north Odisha districts would experience rainfall from July 28.”

The CEC has also forecast another low pressure area in the Bay on July 30. It may trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall in north Odisha districts from July 31 to August 3, it added.
