Bhubaneswar: A Depression has formed over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal off Odisha and adjoining North Andhra Pradesh coasts, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Friday.
At 8.30 am, the depression was about about 70 km southeast of Puri (Odisha), 130 km East of Gopalpur (Odisha), 130 km south-southeast of Paradip (Odisha) and 240 km east-northeast of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh).
“It is likely to move northwestwards and cross Odisha coast near Puri as a depression during early morning hours of tomorrow (July 20). Thereafter, it would move west-northwestwards across Odisha and Chhattisgarh and weaken gradually during subsequent 24 hours,” the weather agency said.
Under its influence, Odisha is likely to experience heavy rainfall during the next 5 days. There is also a warning for extremely heavy rainfall in South Odisha on July 19 and very heavy rainfall across the state on July 20.

The IMD has also warned about squally weather with gusty surface wind speed reaching 40 to 50 kmph along & off Odisha coast and North Bay of Bengal adjoining west central Bay of Bengal from July 19-22. Sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough and fishermen have been advised not to venture into deep sea along and off Odisha coast, north Bay of Bengal adjoining West central Bay of Bengal during this period.
Temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas and underpass road is also likely along with poor visibility during intense spell of rain and traffic congestion in urban areas. There is also a possibility of some damages to kutchha Road and wall collapse in vulnerable kutchha houses. Some damages to vegetables and horticultural crops is likely. “Avoid staying in vulnerable kutchha houses. Advisory on traffic congestion may be followed before leaving for your destination. Arrangement for drainage of excess water from nursery bed, preparations for sowing of paddy crops, seed collections may be done,” it added.
