Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has asked the collectors of six districts, which faced flood-like situation following heavy rain for the last few days, to submit damage assessment report after improvement in weather condition.
The government issued the direction at a review meeting, presided by Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, on the ground situation in Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jajpur and Sundargarh districts which received heavy rainfall under the influence of the Deep Depression over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand for the last four days.
It was revealed at the meeting that river Baitarani was flowing at 18 metre against the danger mark of 18.33 metre near Akhuapada on the day, Budhabalang at 7.52 metre against 8.53 near Govindpur, Subarnarekha at 10.7 metre against 10.36 metre near Rajghat and Jalaka at 6.76 metre against 6.5 metre near Mathani.
According to Central Water Commission, Subarnarekha may flow at 10.95 metre which is the highest level in the reservoir. Several areas including Basta, Bhograi and Baliapal in Balasore district may be flooded on its impact.
The minister directed the collectors to shift the people from the area facing the threat of flood immediately and provide cooked food to them at relief camps. He also told them to make the damage assessment within a week after the situation normalises and wanted the officials to make right assessment of the damaged houses and properties.
