Dhenkanal: Nearly a week after the deserted elephant calf, Padma, was shifted to Kapilash rescue centre in Dhenkanal she has made friends with the other jumbos there.
A team of Forest department is observing the activities of Padma and her behaviour with other elephants. Her health check-up has also been done, as Padma is a bit weak now.
“Padma is comfortable with other elephants. She is staying with them. Other elephants are also taking care of Padma. But, she is not yet come across with any male elephant. In 10 to 15 days, she will be allowed to live with all the elephants,” said Dhenkanal DFO Prakash Chand Gogineni.
The female elephant calf was rescued from Sunapur village on the outskirts of Berhampur.
A herd of 12 elephants, including a tusker, had strayed into the village in the last week of December. The baby elephant who had come with the herd got stuck in marshy lake pond and suffered injuries.
Some locals and fishermen rescued it and tried to give it to the mother elephant. But the herd, especially the tusker did not allow the calf into the group as it was rescued and touched by human being.
