Balagir: A dhaba owner allegedly in an inebriated condition ran over three sisters, killing one of them on the spot, in Odisha’s Balangir district on Tuesday evening.
According to sources, Sushil Kumar Sahu, owner of a dhaba on Patnagarh-Kantabanji State Highway in the district, took out his new car and went for a drive in the evening. He was reportedly a new driver and had consumed alcohol.
While driving through Nunhad village under Belpada police station, Sahu lost control over the wheels near Bus Stand Pada and ran over three sisters outside their house.
One of the sisters, identified as Bhuleswari Majhi, died on the spot while two others sustained critical injuries. The villagers rushed the injured sisters to the nearest hospital. The doctors in the hospital referred them to Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Balangir town as their condition deteriorated.
Following the incident, the villagers detained Sahu’s car and reportedly vandalised his hotel. As tension prevailed in the area, police went to the spot and tried to pacify the agitators. The agitated villagers demanded adequate compensation to the family of the victims.
