Sambalpur: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for several infrastructure and educational projects in Odisha’s Sambalpur district, while also officially launching Hirakud International Half Marathon 2026.
Rs 43 Cr Ghantapada ROB
He virtually dedicated the newly-constructed Ghantapada Railway Over Bridge (ROB) on the Talcher-Angul road. Built at a cost of approximately Rs 43 crore, this modern ROB will eliminate long waits at the nearby level crossing (Handidhua gate), benefiting over 40,000 people across Talcher and nearby panchayats. “This overbridge will not only reduce the distance but also provide new momentum to the economic development of the region,” Dharmendra noted.
He also held discussions with district administration officials on the progress of the second phase of the ‘Samalei’ project at the Maa Samaleswari Temple precinct. This initiative is aimed at providing a unique experiential experience to visitors and pilgrims by creating an ambiance of spirituality.
Indoor Stadium & AI–ML Lab
The Union Minister inaugurated an indoor badminton stadium at Sambalpur University Institute of Information Technology (SUIIT), the varsity’s Burla campus. Alongsi
de this, he also laid foundation stones for several infrastructure as well as development projects related to sports infrastructure, student hostels, and state-of-the-art academic facilities under PM-USHA scheme and infrastructure development grant of state Higher Education department at Sambalpur University.
Emphasising the role of technology in education, Dharmendra announced establishment of Odisha’s first AI (Artificial Intelligence) and ML (Machine Learning) lab at SUIIT, supported by the state government. “This facility will equip students across disciplines with cutting-edge skills in emerging technologies. AI and quantum computing are poised to become essential knowledge areas for all students, regardless of their field of study, from history to physics,” he said.
The university also secured Rs 13 crore NRF grant with 14 patent initiatives.
Hirakud International Half Marathon 2026 Logo Unveiled
The highlight of the day was the grand launch of Hirakud International Half Marathon 2026, organised by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL). Dharmendra unveiled the official logo and jersey of the event scheduled to be held on February 15, along the scenic Hirakud Reservoir. It will feature a flagship 21 km half marathon, along with 10 km, 5 km, and 1.5 km fun run categories.
“The marathon is not merely a sporting event but a platform to showcase Hirakud at the global level. I thank MCL and the Odisha government for their efforts in organising the event and supporting the initiative,” the Union Minister said, urging people to participate and register in large numbers.
Sports and Youth Services Minister Suraj Suryabanshi was present at these events.
