New Delhi: Have you ever seen diabetics looking longingly at a basketful of mangoes? or the pitiful look when they are handed just a slice when the rest of the family is slurping on whole mangoes at the dining table?
Well, Pakistan’s Ghulam Sarwar, a mango expert at M H Panhwar Farms found a way by which diabetic people could enjoy this appetizing fruit. After years of research, he prepared sugar-free mangoes which have about 4 to 6 percent of sugar, Times of India (TOI) reported.
It is said that mango varieties like Chaunsa and Sindhri have 12 to 15 percent of sugar and thus can’t be consumed by diabetics. However, Sarwar’s farm has three varieties of mango – Sonaro, Glenn, and Keitt which have 5.6 percent, 6 percent, and 4.7 percent, respectively.
Sarwar is the nephew of M H Panhwar, who had been conferred Sitara-e-Imtiaz by the Government of Pakistan for his research on fruits like mangoes and bananas. Continuing his uncle’s legacy, Sarwar has made modifications in the techniques used to grow the fruit and conducted several experiments to control the sugar content in the fruit, TOI reported.
For the first time, diet/sugar-free mangoes will be sold in Pakistani markets at Rs 150 per kilogram.
