CM Bhagwant Mann's wife Gurpreest Kaur

New Delhi: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s wife Gurpreet Kaur on Saturday sent a legal notice to former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge justice Ranjit Singh over his allegation that she tried to suppress a rape case in exchange for Rs 5 crore.

Ranjit Singh, brother-in-law of Congress leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira, has been asked to respond to the legal notice within 24 hours of receiving it, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said.

The legal notice was served after the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took cognisance of the allegation against the CM’s wife, and directed the Punjab chief secretary and director general of police to have the matter investigated.

The NHRC also sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) within two weeks.

NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo said that the matter has been forwarded to the Women Safety Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs for consideration.

NHRC will decide on its next course of action after examining the response from the state government.
