Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday warned that stringent action will be taken against those affecting smooth functioning of cooperative societies by creating disturbances.

The government is keeping a close watch on these ‘disturbing elements’ who are hampering the functioning of cooperative societies in the state, the Chief Minister said at an event on the 71st All India Cooperative Week celebrations in Bhubaneswar.

Asserting that the these elements will not be spared by the government, Majhi said those attempting to create hurdles in achieving the mission of a peaceful cooperative society will be punished.

“We have Jharpada jail for those who try to harm the cooperative societies. There is a people’s government and it will not spare anyone who comes in between our work for the people,” the Chief Minister warned.

The CM also came down heavily on the previous BJD accusing it of having made ‘false promises’ to the farmers.

“The previous BJD government failed to keep its promise made to farmers at Sohela (Bargarh) that it would give Rs 100 as bonus over and above the minimum support price (MSP) for paddy,” Majhi said.

He claimed that farmer suicides had risen during the previous government as no bonus was provided to farmers in last nine years.

The CM also alleged that the previous government encouraged corruption in the cooperative sector and asserted that people indulging in corrupt practices in these societies will not be spared.

Now, the BJP government is taking all necessary steps to release additional input subsidy of Rs 800 per quintal of paddy to farmers, the Chief Minister said, adding that the state government is committed to the welfare of farmers.

Notably, the state government has made necessary arrangements to ensure hassle-free paddy procurement which is slated to commence on November 20 in Bargarh district followed by Sambalpur on November 22. Subsequently, the procurement is expected to be carried out in all districts across the state.
