Chennai: Days after Tamil Nadu’s opposition All India Anna Dravida Munetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) accused ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) of tapping their party leaders’ phone, DMK has accused federal agencies of tapping the phones of its party leaders, their friends and relatives.
Complaining that federal agencies are using illegal software to tap phones to create a non-level playing field in electioneering, DMK has urged the Election Commission of India to direct an inquiry into the anti-democratic actions of the Union Government.
In a letter to the state Chief Election Commissioner on Tuesday, DMK leader RS Bharathi wrote, “We understand that the Enforcement Directorate, Central Bureau of Investigation, Income Tax Department, and other agencies under the Union Government are illegally intercepting the telephones of candidates, our frontline leaders, their friends, and close relatives. We cannot be oblivious of the fact that software like Pegasus is said to be used by these agencies against political opponents.”
