Bhubaneswar: Doctors at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) here have saved a 9-month-old from losing vision in his right eye.
The baby boy, from the Odisha capital, had developed congenital glaucoma in his right eye.
The KIMS team on November 1 performed an advanced glaucoma surgery, a combination of trabeculotomy and trabeculectomy. It’s a significant medical achievement, especially on such a young patient.
The surgery was conducted by Dr Saswati Sen, Assistant Professor of Department of Ophthalmology, under the supervision of Head of Department Dr Matuli Das.
The medical team’s efforts prevented the child from facing a life of partial or complete blindness.
He is recovering well and will be discharged soon.
According to a KIMS press release, the cost of treatment here was significantly lower than in other hospitals in Odisha. The baby’s parents had visited different hospitals before zeroing in on KIMS.
Congenital glaucoma is a condition that occurs in approximately 1 out of 10,000 cases, making early diagnosis and intervention crucial for successful treatment, the doctors pointed out.
“The baby had developed the condition in four months. Such conditions happen in 1 out of 10,000 cases. The earlier you treat the eye, the better. He will regain useful vision for the rest of his life,” Dr Sen said.
