Domestic Travel Increases By 4.28% In India During 1st Half Of 2024: DGCA

Bhubaneswar: Passengers carried by domestic airlines during the first half of this year (January-June) increased by 4.28% as compared to the figure for the corresponding period in 2023.

Domestic airlines in India flew 7.93 crore passengers compared to 7.61 crore during the corresponding period.

On a monthly basis, passenger growth stood at 5.76%, according to the data published by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The DGCA claimed that in 2023, the domestic airlines transported 15.2 crore passengers, a significant increase from 12.32 crore in 2022. The annual growth rate stood at 23.36%, according to the data of DGCA.

The overall cancellation rate for scheduled domestic airlines in May 2024 was 1.70%. “The primary reason for these cancellations was adverse weather conditions, which accounted for 39.6% of the total cancellations. Operational reasons made up 23%, miscellaneous reasons 19.5%, technical issues 16.4%, and commercial reasons 1.3%,” the report by DGCA stated.

Additionally, in May 2024, scheduled domestic airlines received a total of 723 passenger-related complaints. The average stood at 0.52 complaints per 10,000 passengers.

According to a DD News report, the rising number of passengers hinted at a growing demand for air travel. It also highlights positive trajectory of the aviation sector.
