New Delhi: In what is being said to the most remarkable political comeback in American history, Donald Trump has beaten Kamala Harris to be elected as the 47th President of the United States.
The former President is set to return to the White House for a second term, overcoming stiff odds and sweeping all seven swing states which made the difference between victory and defeat.
The Republican candidate, who had also run for the Presidency in 2020 and lost to Joe Biden, scripted many firsts by defeating incumbent Vice-President Harris.
For starters, Trump will only be the second President to serve non-consecutive terms. The last time it happened was in 1893, when Grover Cleveland was elected as the 22nd and 24th President of the US, serving from 1885 to 1889 and 1893 to 1897.
Trump’s first term as US President was from 2016 to 2020.
Trump, who turned 78 in June, would be the oldest person in US history to be elected President.
Biden, who dropped out of the race in July due to health issues, is the oldest sitting President. He will turn 82 on November 20.
Another feather in Trump’s cap will be the fact that he is projected to be the first Republican to win the popular vote in 20 years, according to the New York Times.
More significantly, Trump will be the only President in US history to face impeachment proceedings twice during his time in office. He was, however, acquitted on all counts by the Senate in both cases.
Trump, will also be the first US President to hold office while facing legal indictment. He was convicted of 34 felony counts in May, but is yet to be sentenced with a trial scheduled on November 26.
Trump has been accused of falsifying business records related to hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels before his 2016 Presidential election win. Trump has denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty.
