Washington: Celine Dion has taken strong exception to Donald Trump’s team using a song she wrote and sang for ‘Titanic’, at an election rally.
A video of Dion performing the song on a big screen went viral.
“Today, Celine Dion’s management team and her record label Sony Music Entertainment Canada Inc. became aware of the unauthorized usage of the video, recording, musical performance, and likeness of Celine Dion singing ‘My Heart Will Go On’ at a Donald Trump/JD Vance campaign rally in Montana. In no way is this use authorized and Celine Dion does not endorse this or any similar use… And really, that song?” the singer’s team said in a statement.
The Republican Presidential candidate, seeking re-election after 2016, was trolled and ridiculed on social media for playing the 1997 track ‘My Heart Will Go On’ at a rally in the US state of Montana.
Netizens drew analogies between Trump’s campaign and the sinking ship at the heart of the James Cameron film.
Trump has appeared on the back foot since Kamala Harris replaced President Joe Biden in the US election race for the White House.
Trump, who appeared on track to win back the White House before Joe Biden dropped out of the race on July 21, seems to be facing a tough fight from Kamala Harris.
‘My Heart Will Go On’, which was released on Dion’s album ‘Let’s Talk About Love’ and the soundtrack to ‘Titanic’, became one of the biggest songs of all time. It sold 18 million copies and earned Dion an Oscar, a Golden Globe and several Grammys.
The 56-year-old Dion was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder last year, and forced to cancel a number string of shows in 2023 and 2024 as she “was not strong enough to tour.”
A fortnight ago, however, she sang from the Eiffel Tower during the opening ceremony of Paris Olympics.
