Chennai: It was a double medal joy for Hockey Odisha as both men’s and women’s teams capped off the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) with podium finishes.
Hockey Odisha men’s team defeated Madhya Pradesh 4-0 in a thrilling final, while the women’s team claimed the Bronze medal with a 4-3 win over Mizoram.
Pratap Toppo’s two goals, along with one goal each from Karan Lakra and Rohit Kullu, highlighted the dominance of the men’s team in the field. In the women’s game, Supriya Kujur netted two goals, while Surekha Bhala and Karuna Minz contributed one goal each.
David John, coach for the women’s team, said, “I am happy that the team won the bronze. Though there is always room for improvement, each match has been a learning experience. This will surely shape them into stronger contenders for the upcoming matches.”
Hockey Odisha Men’s coach BJ Kariappa said, “Our team played really hard, and their dedication and effort truly showed in the final. All the players delivered an outstanding performance against Madhya Pradesh. Despite facing tough challengers, our players displayed exceptional teamwork and secured a well-deserved victory. We are proud of them and hope that they will perform well in the upcoming matches.”
