Bhubaneswar: Former Director of the Regional Meteorological Science Centre of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu, joined as Director of the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) started by the SOA on Monday.
A meteorological scientist of eminence, Sahu was the longest serving Director at the Regional Meteorological Science Centre at Bhubaneswar having discharged his responsibility over 14 years.
During his tenure as Director, he had closely monitored two severe cyclonic storms—the Phailin in 2013 and Hudhud in 2014—with Phailin making landfall near Gopalpur in Odisha.
Working round the clock, he had kept the administration and media updated with accurate forecast bulletins concerning the approaching cyclones.
With rapid upgradation of technology, Sahu has provided leadership in revolutionizing the weather prediction system in Odisha.
The CEC, functioning in the SOA campus, has been set up as a research centre to contribute towards combating climate change leading to societal benefits and sustainable development.
