Balangir: A driver sustained head injuries after he was attacked by a traffic constable at RTO Square in Balangir district on Wednesday night.

The youth, identified as Satrughan Meher, was rushed to district headquarters hospital for treatment.

Irked over the incident, some local people staged a road blockade demanding immediate action against the traffic cop.

”I was on the way to Balangir town on a pick-up van when the traffic constable Gautam Sahu, a resident of Sukapada, asked me to stop the vehicle in an inebriated state at about 9.30 PM. As soon as I got down, he thrashed me with his belt. Later, he went away from the area. The locals who were present at that time rushed me to the hospital,” Meher said in a complaint lodged with the Town Police Station.

IIC of Town Police Station, Gokulalanda Sahu said police has received a complaint lodged by the victim and action would be taken against the guilty after investigation.

Expressing displeasure over the incident, Balangir SP, K Subramani said during training, the traffic constables are taught to deal with the commuters politely.

Terming the incident as unfortunate, he said while police would investigate the incident on the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim, a departmental inquiry against the traffic havildar would be made simultaneously.
