‘Drunk’ Man Creates Ruckus After ‘Suicide Bid’ In Odisha’s Kathajodi River

Cuttack: High drama ensued late Wednesday night during a rescue operation at Trisulia in Odisha’s Cuttack city when an allegedly intoxicated man jumped from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Setu into the Kathajodi river and later turned aggressive towards rescuers

According to sources, the incident occurred around 8:30 pm when the unidentified man leaped from the bridge under Baranga police station limits. Alert locals immediately informed police, who promptly reached the spot along with Fire Services team and launched a search and rescue operation.

Fire Services personnel dived into the river and successfully pulled the man out.

However, the situation

escalated once he was brought to the riverbank. Still under the influence of alcohol, the man allegedly created a ruckus, repeatedly attempted to jump back into the water, abused officials, and physically attacked Fire Services personnel and locals assisting in the operation. “He kept running away and abusing officials. We got cuts and bruises from his attack,” a local who helped during the rescue told a news channel.

After a strenuous effort lasting nearly 90 minutes, they managed to restrain him and shifted him to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for treatment. While his identity is yet to be ascertained, locals noted he was speaking in Bengali and Hindi.

“Inspectors-in charge of Baranga, Markatnagar and Bidanasi police stations reached the spot. The man was saved due to the prompt response of the Fire Services team. He appeared to be in an intoxicated state and seemed mentally disturbed. An investigation is underway to determine what prompted him to take this extreme step,” ACP Zone-III of Cuttack UPD Ananya Awasthi told the media.
