Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Tuesday arrested a woman in connection with the alleged murder of a eatery owner, Biswajit Nayak (42), whose decomposed body with his throat slit was recovered in his home at Sagua under Balianta police station limits, near Odisha capital, on January 14.
The accused has been identified as Sunki Rana (36), a native of Jharsuguda.
According to a police release, Sunki was previously was involved in a 2005 murder case. After being released from jail about four years ago, she started staying at an ashram in Puri. She came in contact with Biswajit through his mother, who was visiting ashram for some treatment, and soon an affair developed between the duo. Sunki used to visit him regularly after taking permission from the head of the ashram at Puri to visit her native village.
On December 30, 2023, she visited Biswajit, who convinced her to stay with her despite repeated calls from the ashram to return. Around 3 pm on January 12, they got into quarrel as he did not want her to return to the ashram. In a fit of rage, Sunki suddenly hit Biswajit on the head with a wooden stick, killing him on the spot. She then concealed the blood stained wooden stick and left for Puri in an auto-rickshaw in the evening.

Nayak was owner of a small eatery at VSS Nagar in Bhubaneswar and though his family stayed in the village, he lived alone in a separate house, having apparently separated from his wife.
“The woman has anger issues and has been involved in similar incidents in the past. The crime has been committed in the heat of the moment. The wooden stick was the main murder weapon and Biswajit died due to excessive bleeding and haemorrhage,” Bhubaneswar DCP Prateek Sing told a presser.
She was nabbed from Puri.
The murder weapon, blood-stained apparels and the mobile phone have been seized, the DCP further said, adding that investigation is underway to ascertain her antecedents and properties in Bhubaneswar.
