New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) on Friday revoked the ‘star campaigner’ status of Congress’ Kamal Nath for the Madhya Pradesh by-polls.
EC took action against the veteran leader following repeated violations of model code while campaigning for the by-polls in 28 Assembly constituencies in the state, PTI reported.
The Commission said in its order: “For repeated violation of Model Code of Conduct and for completely disregarding the advisory issued to him, the Commission hereby revokes the status of leader of political party (Star Campaigner) of Kamal Nath, Ex-Chief Minister, Madhya Pradesh, with immediate effect for the current By-elections of Legislative Assembly of Madhya Pradesh.”
The election body added that Nath being a leader of a political party had repeatedly “breached ethical and dignified behaviour”, an NDTV report said.
“If any campaign is done by Kamal Nath from now onwards, the entire expenditure related to travel, stay and visit will be completely borne by the candidate in whose constituency he carries out campaigning,” EC’s order further said.
The former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister was earlier warned by the Election Commission after he made a sexist remark against a BJP candidate. In his campaign rally at Dabra, he had called BJP’s Imarti Devi an “item”.
