Balangir: Police on Tuesday arrested former Balangir MLA Balgopal Mishra, his son and supporters for allegedly hurling eggs at Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s carcade at Salebhata in Loisingha Assembly constituency the previous evening.
According to sources, the Chief Minister reached Balangir at 7 pm for a roadshow. He then left for Salebhata to conduct another roadshow. While he was on the way for Bargarh to campaign for his party candidates, Mishra, his son and supporters hurled eggs at his carcade. Though it was not known whether the eggs hit the hi-tech campaign bus, in which the Chief Minister was travelling, some landed on the vehicles which were following it.
The incident took place in the presence of nine platoons of armed police.
Tension ran high in the area following the incident as the police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the agitators. Police later conducted flag march to restore normalcy in the area.
Balgopal Mishra, his son and some of his supporters were detained at the Town Police Station for interrogation. They were later arrested on Tuesday.
Notably, Balgopal had earlier warned the state government against conducting the roadshow at Salebhata. Apprehending law and order situation, the district administration had made elaborate security arrangements.
