Puri: An elderly devotee was rescued after he fell into an open well inside the Jagannath temple in Odisha’s Puri town on Tuesday.
According to sources, the devotee, identified as 65-year-old Dhruva Chakraborty, and his wife from West Bengal were on a visit to the Pilgrim Town. They had gone to the temple and offered puja to sibling deities in the evening.
Later, they were moving on the temple premises and went to Ananda Bazaar to have Mahaprasad. They went to the well, located on near Uttar Dwar (north gate) of the temple, probably to fetch water. Dhruva somheow slipped and fell into the well.
As his wife shouted for help, the servitors rushed to the spot and informed Singha Dwar (Lion’s Gate) police station. A police team along with Fire services personnel reached the well and started rescue operation.
After nearly an hour’s operation, Dhruva was brought out of the 70 feet deep well by the Fire personnel. Though he had not sustained any injuries, the Bengal devotee was admitted in the district headquarters hospital.
The temple administration was investigating the circumstances that led to the mishap, the sources said.
