Rayagada: In an unfortunate incident, an elderly man was allegedly killed by the villagers on suspicion of practising witchcraft in a village of Odisha’s Rayagada district late Wednesday night.
According to sources, some people of Titiguda village under Kashipur block stormed into the house of the victim, Dai Majhi and attacked his family while they were asleep.
While Dai died on the spot in the brutal attack, his two sons, identified as Durya Majhi and Lalu Majhi, sustained critical injuries. Later, other villagers admitted them in Tikiri hospital.
On being informed by Majhi’s family members, a team from Tikiri police station went to Titiguda and sent the body for post-mortem. “We have detained a person in connection with the incident. Further investigation is underway,” SDPO Dibyajyoti Das told the media persons.
Lalu Majhi, one of the relatives of Dai Majhi, said he did not come to the rescue of Dai’s family in fear of being attacked. “The incident took place after 10 pm. Dina Majhi, Mana Majhi, Naba Majhi, Bhima Majhi and Rajib Majhi of the village were involved in the incident,” said Lalu.
