Nabarangpur: Tension erupted in Kodinga police station area in Nabarangpur district on Sunday following the death of a 62-year-old man allegedly due to police assault.
The deceased has been identified as Gobardhan Bindhani, a resident of Panjaraguda village near Dabugaon.
According to sources, a police team on Saturday conducted a raid at Khutiguda weekly market and picked up Gobardhan for his alleged involvement in illegal betting on cockfights. The policemen also assaulted some other persons allegedly involved in betting activities, they added.
Police detained Gobardhan at Kodinga police station, where he was allegedly tortured. He was rushed to the Nabarangpur district headquarters hospital in a critical condition. Later, he was shifted to a hospital in Visakhapatnam.
On Sunday morning, his family received news of his death. Soon, irate villagers lay seige to the police station and staged a road blockade by burning tyres.
Section 144 of CrPC was imposed in the area to avoid any untoward incident.
