Balasore: Half-burnt body of an elderly woman, who was allegedly burnt alive by her son, was recovered at Belada village under Kamarda police station limits in Odisha’s Balasore district on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Manjurani Behera, the wife of Khudiram Behera.
A villager alleged that couple brutally thrashed her and then set her ablaze by pouring kerosene on her, thinking that she had died, to garb Rs 6 which she had received recently following maturation of an insurance policy.
Her family, however, claimed she set herself on fire last night over a domestic dispute when other members were asleep.
Kamarda police have sent the body for postmortem and initiated an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to her death.
