New Delhi: Bike rallies have been banned 72 hours before voting takes place in states where elections will be held in March-April.
“It was brought to the Election Commission’s notice that in some places bikes are used by anti-social elements to intimidate voters before poll and/or on polling day. The EC has decided that bike rallies shall not be allowed at any place 72 hours before date of poll or on poll day in poll-bound constituencies,” ANI quoted Election Commission (EC) as saying.
Assembly elections are being held in Assam (126 seats, 3 phases), West Bengal (294 seats, 8 phases), Kerala (140, single phase), Tamil Nadu (234, single phase) and Puducherry (30, single phase).
As per normal practice, Campaigning at a particular constituency closes 48 hours before voting takes place there. In a departure, motorcycle rallies have been barred this time 72 hours before polling starts.
The first round of voting will take place on March 27, and the final round on April 29, both in West Bengal. Counting of votes will take place in all states on May 2.
