Sundargarh: An elephant calf died after falling into a trench near Mahipani under Bisra forest range in Sundargarh on Thursday.
According to sources, the calf accidentally fell into the trench, which was dug by the Railways department, and died. Locals spotted the carcass and informed the Forest Department.
On being informed, the forest officials reached the spot and sent it for postmortem.
Meanwhile, panic gripped Koria and Hataroad in Dhenkanal district after a herd of elephants strayed into these areas. Some people have sustained injuries after being attacked by elephants, the sources added.
