Keonjhar: The female elephant, which gave birth to a stillborn calf in Champua forest range of the district on Saturday with the help of a veterinary team after suffering labour pain for 48 hours, died on Sunday.
The elephant had had entered the forest range along with a herd of 25 elephants a few days back and went into labour pain on Thursday. On the same day, two other elephants safely gave birth to babies but this elephant continued to wander in pain.
The forest officials and a wildlife treatment team kept a watch on it and tracked its movement. As the 15-year-old elephant could not give birth, an expert team from Orissa University of Agriculture Technology (OUAT) reached the place on Saturday.
After tranquilising the elephant, the four-member team of veterinarians headed by Dr Indramani Nath, a professor of OUAT, started an operation on the elephant. After about one hour of operation, it gave birth to a dead female calf.
The forest officials and wildlife experts were keeping a close watch on the elephant after the operation in the forest. But it died on Sunday morning. DFO DD Hanumat and Champua Ranger Sanjib Rout went to the spot to take stock of the situation.
“Since the elephant was young, it may have died due to complicacies in delivery. Though the treatment was going on, it could not be saved. Its body has been buried,” said Rout.
