Elephant Herd From Chandaka Moves Towards Khurda, Nayagarh

Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Forest Division officials are closely monitoring an elephant herd from Chandaka sanctuary which is moving towards the bordering areas of Khurda and Nayagarh districts.

According to reports, the herd of 42 wild elephants is now moving in separate groups towards Tangi and Chilika lake in Khurda district and Ranapur in Nayagarh district.

The Forest department has formed 10 special teams to watch the different groups. Besides, the teams will also try to identify the elephants afflicted with herpes virus.

Notably, Forest and Environment Minister Bikram Keshari Arukha had said on Friday that the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has formed a six-member specialist team to ascertain the cause for the spread of herpes virus.

Notably, four elephants in Nandankanan Zoo and another in Chandaka sanctuary had died of herpes recently.
