Sambalpur: An adult elephant strayed from the herd and died reportedly due to illness in a forest of Odisha’s Sambalpur on Tuesday.
As per reports, a herd of 16 elephants was moving in Basiapada forest of Sadar Range in the district in the morning. While crossing a rivulet, a male tusker stayed back and after some time died.
Sambalpur DFO said the tusker got separated from its herd at about 8.30 am. The Forest officials on beat duty reported it and kept a watch on the elephant.
They found the 20-year-old tusker lying on the ground and behaving abnormally apparently due to health problem. On being informed, veterinary doctors rushed to the spot. But the tusker died at around 2.30 pm, said the DFO.
Later, the veterinarians conducted post-mortem on the elephant to ascertain the cause of its death.
