Nabarangpur: The people of a village in the district were in a panic as a herd of elephants damaged standing crop and wreaked havoc for the entire Tuesday night.
According to sources, the herd of elephants strayed into Hatigaan village under Raighara block from Salevata jungle of Chhattisgarh in the evening.
The elephants feasted on the corn crop in the farmland and wandered around the village the whole night. The herd returned to jungle on Wednesday morning.
On being informed, a team of Forest officials, led by Raighar Ranger Sukumar Dukhu went to Hatigaan. Tracing the footprints of the retreating elephants, they came to know that the herd had gone towards Chhattisgarh border.
The villagers said this is for the first time that the elephants have entered their village.
