Jharsuguda: People in Odisha’s Jharsuguda were in a state of panic when a herd of elephants sneaked into the town in the early hours of Sunday.
Sources said nine elephants were found moving in Mangal Bazaar, Sarbahal and Mungapada areas of the town after straying from Himagiri forest in Sundargarh district.
According to forest officials, the wild animals had crossed Ib river before entering the town.
The forest department, earlier alerted about a 12-member jumbo herd, had deployed a special squad on the outskirts of the town to prevent their entry. However, nine of the elephants managed to enter the town.
The forest officials launched an operation and finally drove the elephants out. It was learnt that the herd was now holed up in nearby Brundamal area, the sources added.
News agency ANI also shared a video of a herd crossing the residential areas of Brajrajnagar in Jharsuguda last night.
