Bhubaneswar: Eminent artist and art critic Jagadish Chandra Kanungo passed away at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday following a prolonged illness. He was 86.
Kanungo, who was undergoing treatment at a private hospital due to age-related ailments, breathed his last in the morning, family sources said
A former president of the Oisha Lalit Kala Akademi, Kanungo had carved a special identify for himself in the state’s cultural and intellectual landscape. His demise marks the end of an era in the cultural sector, where he was widely regarded as one of the state’s most influential voices in contemporary art and heritage conservation.
Having devoted decades to promoting visual arts, he played a key role in strengthening Odisha’s artistic institutions and preserving its traditional art forms. Before serving as the president of the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi, he had worked as its secretary for 16 years, contributing significantly to its growth and outreach.
Widely respected as a distinguished art critic and scholar, Kanungo made lasting contributions to the fields of contemporary art, heritage conservation, and art education. He edited the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi’s journal and was also the editor of the acclaimed art magazine ‘Ranga Rekha’, first published in 1986.
He was instrumental in organising exhibitions, workshops, and cultural initiatives for promoting Odisha’s traditional Pattachitra painting and showcasing the works of contemporary artists.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to art and culture, Kanungo was honoured with the prestigious Dharmapada Award. His work earned him immense respect among artists, scholars, and cultural institutions across the country.
His demise was mourned by from artists, academicians, and cultural organisations, who paid tributes to the departed soul, describing him not only for his artistic brilliance but also for his commitment to nurturing young talent and preserving Odisha’s cultural legacy.
