Cuttack: Former English professor and linguist Dr Mahajitswar Das passed away at his Cuttack residence on Monday. He was 82.
Born in 1938, Das joined Odisha Education Service after his masters and taught in some of the prestigious colleges of the state including Ravenshaw in Cuttack. He did his PhD from the erstwhile Centre of English and Foreign Languages, Hyderabad (now known as English and Foreign Languages University).
He had built a reputation as a wonderful classroom teacher.
Das was director of the English Language Teaching Institute (ELTI), Bhubaneswar, for a few years in the late 1980s.
During his tenure, ELTI had the distinction of hosting a distinguished talk by the Nobel Laureate Sir William Golding.
In 1991, Das was invited to join the English Language Teaching Centre at the English Department of Utkal University He continued at the centre till his retirement in 1998. He also headed the department for one year (1994-95) before ill health forced him to go on leave.
