New Delhi: After a period of strained relations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the importance attached by India to its relationship with Maldives under its ‘Neighbourhood First’ Policy and Vision SAGAR, reaffirming New Delhi’s unwavering commitment to assist Maldives on its developmental journey and priorities.  Modi made the statement about meeting President Mohamed Muizzu on Monday in New Delhi.

Ties between India and the Maldives had hit the rough waters ever since Mohamed Muizzu won the presidency in Maldives on an ‘India Out’ campaign. He had ordered the eviction of Indian troops from the island nation. But, recently he had mellowed down his anti-India rhetoric. However, New Delhi has remained concerned about his pro-China inclinations.

“India and Maldives relations are centuries old. India is Maldives’ nearest neighbour and close friend,” PM Modi said, adding, “Maldives holds an important position in our neighbourhood policy and SAGAR vision. India has always played the role of first responder for Maldives.”

This is Muizzu’s first visit to India since he assumed office last November. He landed in New Delhi on Sunday in a bid to mend relations at a time when he is navigating an ailing economy in Maldives.

Muizzu expressed his appreciation for the decision of the Government of India to extend support in the form of USD 400 million and INR 30 billion as a bilateral currency swap agreement, instrumental in tackling the ongoing financial challenges faced by the Maldives. The leaders also agreed to implement further measures to support Maldives in addressing its financial challenges.

The leaders acknowledged that it was an opportune time for both sides to chart a new framework for cooperation with an aim to comprehensively transform the bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership, which is people-centric, future-oriented and will act as an anchor of stability in the Indian Ocean Region.
