Mumbai: A 32-year-old mechanical engineer was arrested in the city for the alleged sexual assault of at least 12 women.
Police said they had been looking for the accused, Karan Gupta alias Mahesh, for the past four months and finally managed to arrest him from Malad in Mumbai on Monday.
Revealing Mahesh’s modus operandi, police said he created several fake profiles on matrimonial websites to lure “highly educated women”. The accused would then contact the women over phone and fix a meeting at a pub, restaurant or mall. He sexually assaulted the women during these meetings.
“The accused didn’t use his registered phone number but used different SIM cards for each crime. He even booked Ola and Uber cabs through these SIM cards,” India Today quoted a senior police officer as saying. “Mahesh has good knowledge of computers and also worked as a hacker for some time,” the officer added.
According to police, the accused had studied in a reputed institute and worked for big companies in the past.
