Rayagada: A junior engineer, working with the Works Department in Kashipur block of Odisha’s Rayagada district, has been arrested on charges of marrying four women with getting a divorce.
The accused was identified as Gopinath Kisan.
This incident came to the fore after his fourth wife Sunita Madhia lodged a complaint against the engineer, accusing him of multiple marriage and dowry torture.
In her complaint, Sunita, a resident of Chakradharnagar in Chhattisgarh, alleged that she tied the knot with Kisan in February 2022 at Jharsuguda after getting to know him through a matrimonial site. Five months into the wedding, he began physically and mentally torturing her for dowry, she said.
“Kisan told me that his first wife had died and it was his second marriage. Later, I came to know that he had married twice earlier but never took divorce from them. He starting torturing me when I came to know about his previous marriages. He also attempted to throw me off the terrace in a bid to kill me. The mother of his first wife supported him in torturing me,” she alleged.
Sunita further said that she had reported the matter to police earlier and he had then sought a second chance from her.
She added that his previous two wives hailed from Sundargarh and Rourkela and he allegedly tortured and abandoned them.
Based on her complaint, police registered a case under Sections 90 (consent known to be given under fear or misconception) and 13 (cruelty which is a ground for dissolution of marriage) of the IPC and arrested Kisan from his Saipriya Nagar residence.
While investigation is underway, police have also informed the executive engineer of the department about his arrest.
