Bhubaneswar: Three persons, including an engineering student, have been arrested Excise department sleuths for their alleged involvement in brown sugar racket in Bhubaneswar.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of Excise department nabbed the three and seized over 275 grams of brown sugar from their possession after conducting a raid in the capital city on Sunday.
As per information, the three arrested persons included a BTech girl student of a private engineering college, his boyfriend Subhrajyoti and associate Rahul Nayak.
The three were proceeding to Bhubaneswar from Khurda after procuring brown sugar when the Excise team intercepted their vehicle and conducted a thorough search.
On seeing a barricade set up by the Excise team for checking of vehicles for narcotic substances and illicit liquor, the three sensed trouble and sped away. The Excise department officials chased their vehicle and nabbed the three, sources said.
It was alleged that Subhrajyoti used brown sugar himself and sold it to his friends and others.
The three, however, denied that they were involved in any brown sugar racket though some of them used the narcotic substance occasionally.
Brown sugar seized from their possession is valued at Rs 25 lakh in the market.
