Bhubaneswar: A young scooter rider died after allegedly being run over by truck on the overbridge near Rasulgarh Chhak in Odisha capital on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Pratyuparna Das, a first year BTech student at Odisha University of Technology and Research (OUTR, formerly CET).
Sources said that the rider was en route to Vani Vihar through the service lane when he lost balance and fell off the scooter and was run over by the speeding truck. The accident took place when 19-year-old Pratyuparna was reportedly speaking on his phone while riding his two-wheeler. He died on the spot.
The accident, which took place around 8.50 am, brought vehicular movement to a halt between Rasulgarh to Vani Vihar for some time as locals staged a blockade. Saheed Nagar and Macheswar police soon reached the spot and regulated the traffic. While the body of the deceased has been sent to Capital Hospital for postmortem, police are also checking available CCTV footage to nab the driver of the killer truck, which reportedly sped away towards Jaydev Vihar Chhak.
The mobile phone of the rider was also destroyed in the crash, the sources added.
