Bhubaneswar: The Department of English of Utkal University in Bhubaneswar celebrated World Theatre Day on Monday.
Prof Sabita Acharya, Vice-Chancellor of the university released the newsletter of the department, ‘English at Utkal’, and the bulletin with a profile of its faculty, students, achievements, research, outreach, awards and prospect.
Prof Prafulla Mohanty, well-known academic and writer, and Pradosh Mohanty of SH Foundation, a literature enthusiast spoke at a seminar organised on the occasion. The convener of the seminar Prof Asim Ranjan Parhi spoke about the significance of the theatre/Jatra tradition of Odisha historically.
The students read out significant passages from plays across the world and languages including Odia, English and Hindi and staged a short play adaptation of ‘The Father’ by August Strindberg. Members of faculty spoke on the craft and narrative structure of the drama. Piyush Kuanr, the seminar secretary of the department, proposed the vote of thanks.
