Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has arrested a man who was allegedly working for Pakistan-based Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

The man, identified as Mohammed Raees, was allegedly supplying vital information about Indian military establishments to his Pakistan handlers, UP ATS said on Sunday.

Raees, a resident of Gonda district, came into contact with Armaan when he was working in Mumbai. Armaan tried to instigate him by alleging oppression of members of Muslim community in India, Raees told the police.

Raees further claimed when he told Armaan that he wanted to go to Saudi Arabia for work, Armaan said he would give Raees’ number to a Pakistani person. Raees was persuaded to spy against India in return for a generous amount.

Last year, Raees received a call from a foreign number from a man who called himself Hussain and claimed to be a Pakistani spy, the ATS informed.

Raees, who roped in his friend and many others for espionage, was asked to provide information about military cantonments and establishments.

Based on surveillance and tip-off, UP ATS found Raees’ activities to be suspicious and called him for questioning in Lucknow.

“Raees, a resident of Gonda, was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS). He was summoned to the ATS headquarters here and during interrogation, he confessed to his involvement in spying,” Prashant Kumar, Special DG (Law and Order), said in a statement.

An FIR has been registered against Raees at Lucknow ATS police station under IPC sections 121 A (waging or attempting to wage war) and 123 (concealing with intent to facilitate design to wage war), and under the Officials Secrets Act, 1923.
