Evading taxes: Silver items worth Rs 1 cr seized in Sambalpur

Sambalpur: Police here on Friday seized 250 kg of silver items, including jewellery and two bricks weighing 5 kg each, worth nearly Rs 1 crore from a car bearing Chhattisgarh number plate and detained two persons in this connection.

The city police along with Commerce and Transport department officials intercepted the vehicle, which had arrived in Sambalpur from Raipur via Bargarh. The silver jewellery and bricks were stashed inside a bag in the trunk.

Official sources said this was attempt by a Raipur-based outlet to sell the silver items here without paying taxes, a practice quite rampant.

The two arrested were assigned the task of handing over the consignment. If the owner produces valid invoice of purchase, then only Rs 6 lakh fine will be levied for evading tax, the sources added.
