Cuttack: The district administration and Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) began an eviction drive in the periphery of SCB Medical College and Hospital here on Tuesday.
The eviction followed the Chief Minister’s announcement to enhance SCB to a state-of-the-art hospital with 3000 beds. As part of the plan, the administration had approved a rehabilitation package for the people, business establishments and other organizations to be evicted for the expansion work a week earlier.
Sources said the eviction drive began at 8.30 am with six JCB machines demolishing the fish and poultry market complex near Jobra. The demolition was carried out in the presence of four police platoons and over 40 district and CMC officials.
CMC officials informed that all trading establishments will demolished from Jobra barrage to the Settlement Office and Chunabhati Chhak. Besides, shops on both sides of the Forest Office lane will also be evicted.
The CMC deputy commissioner said about 40 shops will be demolished on Tuesday. Later, the evicted shop owners will be rehabilitated in other areas of the city that will be identified by the revenue inspector and amin.
He said of the 40 shops to be demolished, 12 were registered with the CMC. “It has been decided that each of the 12 CMC registered shop owners will be given Rs 1 lakh in cash. The street vendors will be given Rs 20,000 each and the owners of non-registered or temporary shops will receive Rs 30,000 each.
Till reports last came in, there was no law and order situation during the eviction drive.
