Balasore: The Odisha Information Commission has slapped a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the former SP of Balasore, Niti Shekhar, for not providing information to an RTI activist.
The Commission has directed Shekhar to provide the information to the RTI activist within a week.
According to sources, RTI activist Banaja Manjari Mishra had sought information from the SP on the arrest of one Subrat Behera of Bhogarai area in connection with three cases registered simultaneously at Khaira, Simulia and Soro police stations in 2016.
As the SP did not furnish the information, Mishra had moved the Odisha Information Commission in 2017.
Though the Commission had directed the SP to appear in person and fixed 11 dates, he neither appeared nor furnished the information.
Taking strong exception to the non-compliance of its order, the Odisha Information Commissioner, Sunil Kumar Mishra, has ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh and also directed him to furnish all the information to the RTI activist within a week.
Besides, the Commission has also requested people to apprise it of the non-compliance of the information by any government agencies.
