New Delhi: Former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala will have to go to jail once again.
The 87-year-old Chautala was on Friday sentenced to four years in prison and fined Rs 50 lakh in a disproportionate assets (DA) case.
Chautala, who was convicted by the Rouse Avenue Court on May 21, had urged the court to grant him minimum punishment because of medical ailments and old age.
Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on the other hand, sought maximum punishment for Chautala to send a strong message to society.
Chautala had previously served a 10-year prison term after he and his son Ajay were found guilty of corruption in a teacher recruitment scam in 2013. Chautala was released from jail in July 2021, six months after a Delhi court slapped money-laundering charges in the current disproportionate assets case.
Besides the four-year jail term and fine, four properties owned by Chautala will be confiscated, the court said while announcing the quantum of punishment today.
The CBI filed a case against Chautala in 2005 and a chargesheet in March 2010 for allegedly amassing assets amounting to Rs 6.09 crore between 1993 and 2006 — which was disproportionate to his legitimate income.
