Bengaluru: Former Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa’s home and office in Shivamoga district were attacked during a protest on Monday.

Members of Banjara and Bhovi communities were protesting against the internal reservation for Scheduled Castes (SCs) announced by the state government.

As stones were hurled at Yediyurappa’s residence, police had to use batons to disperse hundreds of protesters, which included women.

Some of the protesters and police officials were injured, PTI reported.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC were imposed in Shikaripura town.

The Banjara community has been a major beneficiary of SC reservations in Karnataka. But their share of reservations will plummet following the recent decision taken by the Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government.

The protesters alleged that less reservation has been given to the ‘Scheduled Caste-Touchables’ category, to which the Banjara community belongs.

From 17% reservation, the quota for SC-Touchables will come down to 4.5%.

The recent internal reservations, decided on the basis of Sadashiva Commission report, have allocated specific quotas to different sub-castes within the SC community.
