Mumbai: Former Maharashtra Home minister Anil Deshmukh was on Tuesday remanded to Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody till November 6.
Deshmukh, arrested by the ED during the early hours of Tuesday after a 12-hour-long interrogation, was produced before Additional Sessions Judge PB Jadhav, reported Bar and Bench.
ED initiated the probe against Deshmukh and his associates after the CBI filed an FIR following a court-directed enquiry into allegations of corruption and misuse of his official position.
ED alleged that while Deshmukh was Home minister, he directed dismissed Mumbai policeman Sachin Waze to collect money — amounting to Rs 4.7 crore — from different restaurants and bars in Mumbai.
The agency further claimed that Deshmukh transferred the extorted money to a Nagpur-based trust controlled by his family members.
Deshmukh did not comply with any of the five ED summons, as he sought permission to attend the questioning through his authorised representatives.
Deshmukh also filed a petition in Bombay High Court challenging the ED summons. The high court dismissed his petition on Friday and directed him to take steps to approach the courts for anticipatory bail.
Deshmukh finally appeared before ED officials on Monday, and was arrested after nearly 12 hours of grilling.
